In this episode of Three Questions with Joe Sanfelippo, Joe shares this advice: “The kids don’t know if they belong in that room until they look in your eyes...it is not about the ‘stuff. Find a way to connect in a way that you would want to be connected with as a kid.” Although the two start off this episode testing out George’s new podcasting equipment, they really get into a meaningful conversation about these three questions:
Who is a teacher that has inspired you?
Tell about one administrator who impacted you.
What advice would you give your first-year teacher self?
If you watch to the end, don’t mind Joe’s offbeat clap at the end - he claims there was a delay! As you watch on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts, share your answers to the same questions that George asks Joe to answer in the comments below!

"We often give our best advice away to others for free, but we do not take it ourselves."
When we show up and help others, when we persevere through tough conditions, when we take time to appreciate this moment, we can focus on our progression and growth. Education is not about getting to an endpoint, it is about growing and developing as we go. This podcast ends with a reminder to stop, take a moment, and appreciate what we have done. So, remind yourself that you are proud of yourself!
Three Points:
- We need to get better at taking our own advice we give freely to others.
- The focus should be mostly on progression and growth, which will ultimately lead to results.
- Education is not about getting to an endpoint, it is about growing and developing.

If you are not already watching these podcasts on YouTube, this episode is a must-watch - you have to see Patrick Larkin and his awesome family dancing to one of the TikTok trends! This episode goes beyond Patrick's amazing dance moves and continues to discuss ways to find gratitude in any situation. The two reflect on a blog post that Patrick wrote during the pandemic and how the mindset of finding gratitude helps us evaluate the situation we are in. Part of evaluating our situation is also recognizing the needs of our learners - mentally, physically, and emotionally. George and Patrick talk about what they are doing to support themselves - mentally, physically, and emotionally - as well as their learners; the two share strategies that they have found that work for them as they keep a routine and help the learners they connect with. George shares a personal goal of reading more content and how he is working on both consuming and creating content; when we listen to others, we can often reflect on other ideas in order to gain more perspective. Patrick reflects on the idea of what innovation is as he looks at going beyond the technology being used and discusses how to embrace the change and model an innovative mindset by not being afraid to fail. One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that “the message matters, but how you communicate the message matters as well.” How do we bring people along with us on our journey?
Three main points:
-Finding gratitude in any situation
-Connecting physical, mental, and emotional health to support all learners
-Balancing consumption and creation of content for our learners
Quotes:
"We will learn a lot more if we fail than if we stay with our mundane tactics." - Patrick Larkin
"Find one thing each day that you are grateful for that would not have been possible if we were not in these unique circumstances." - Patrick Larkin
"The message matters, but how you communicate the message matters as well." - George Couros

3 Main Points:
Finding and recognizing the dreams, needs, and abilities of all learners.
How do we cheer people on and step out of our world to show gratitude and love to make the world better?
Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late.
Laurie McIntosh and George Couros have an energetic and inspiring conversation about education, "dreams, needs, and abilities" as described by Tom Hierck and reflected on by Laurie in this podcast, and the impact of consistent kindness. The two also talk about Laurie's upcoming book, Teachers These Days which she co-writes with Jody Carrington! Both George and Laurie are currently residing in Alberta, Canada, so the two talk about education in their province and even hold a fun side conversation about hockey rivalries! One of the most powerful stories that Laurie shares in this podcast and in her upcoming book is one she experienced with a co-worker and how she recognized the different ways that people show appreciation, especially when we are consistent with our kindness over extended periods of time. Laurie acknowledges that she is limited on energy at times and shares the very real exhaustion that she feels, she also shares how she continues to be kind, present, and mindful despite that exhaustion. Listen to the end to hear what George says that actually brings Laurie to tears (payback for when she made George cry on a plane)! The episode closes with
this advice from George: "Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late."

"You cannot get people to change their ideas based on what you say. You can only create conditions where change is more likely to happen." In this episode of The Innovator's Mindset Podcast, George Couros reflects on how he has been spending more time reading and consuming; a time he refers to as "creation to consumption." When we listen, when we consume, we are giving others the opportunity to assure us that standing still is crucial - instead of convincing someone that change is necessary, let them explain their thoughts and reflect on the ideas together. Listening is helpful to both parties. Maybe you are wrong, and they have valid points. Perhaps you are on the right track, but you find some common ground that you can build on. Or maybe you figure out that neither party is going to move and you don’t want to spend your time spinning your wheels in the same spot. This is not about proving who is right and who is wrong, it is about finding places where we can work together to help improve education for all learners.
