There are powerful connections in our school and there are ways to make sure that all learners have what they need to be successful. When we build relationships, we are able to go further, but there is more than that - we have to be able to lead learners in a common direction. This episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast with Brad Gustafson, an amazing principal, author, and speaker, shares strategies and ways to not only build relationships but to use those connections to create opportunities that empower our learners. Dr. Gustafson shares a powerful story about how his words, shared through the voices of his learners, have helped him in a time of struggle. The two get very serious as they talk about relationships and testing in schools. This leads Couros to share this idea: "If you focus on developing kids as powerful learners, they will do fine on the test. But if you focus on kids doing well on tests, it doesn't mean they will be powerful learners." Through this episode, the two explore strategies and ideas that make schools more empowering for learners.

George Couros and Steve Bollar talk about the powerful impact of all teachers and reflect on Bollar’s past as an art teacher and how he ended up in a leadership position. Bollar also explains the two types of school culture that can impact the school climate - behavioral culture and operational culture. Towards the end, Bollar shares his powerful ideas on integrity and what that looks like in a position of leadership.
