George Couros starts this #MindsetMonday with a story from his time coaching basketball. Couros’ reflection on this story brings up the question about what type of lead we want others to follow. We all have struggles; when we interact with others, it is important to think about whether the conversations being had tear others down or lift others up.
Quotes (PIP):
What is the lead that you want others to follow?
How do your actions and interactions impact others?
Is this a space where we are tearing down or where we are elevating?
Clip Description:
George Couros shares a story about asking questions to understand, an idea inspired by Stephen Covey’s work: “seek first to understand, then to be understood.” Couros reflects on a referee who called him out on the way he was interacting with others during his time coaching basketball. From this interaction, Couros learned more about the way that we communicate as leaders and how this impacts others.

The opening question of Season 2 Episode 4 of Mindset Monday asks listeners and viewers to reflect on where they are right now. Not physically, but are you actually present in what you are doing right now? This episode shares a realization that George Couros had while he was working out and watching the miniseries, The Last Dance. Couros reflects on how he would, in the past, be looking for what was next - when he was a teacher, he was looking for ways to get into admin, when he was in admin, he was looking for ways to get into central office…Couros reflects on these times and considers how this actually took him away from the present.
Quotes (PIP):
“Most people struggle to be present…Most people live in fear because they project the past. Michael’s a mystic. He was never anywhere else. His gift was not that he could jump high, run fast, shoot a basketball; his gift was that he was completely present and that was the separator… A big downfall of a lot of players who are otherwise gifted is thinking about failure. Michael didn’t allow what he couldn’t control to get inside his head. He would say, ‘Why would I think about missing a shot I haven’t even taken yet?’ " -The Last Dance, Episode 10: Mark Vancil, author of Rare Air
"In a world full of distractions, the ability to be in the moment, doing what you are doing, is really beneficial." - George Couros
What could happen if you are present in what you are doing? How could this be different if you are not present?
"You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets,
Or you can come to terms and realize...
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself,
makes much more sense to live in the present tense."

George Couros shares this message in the intro: “There are things that we can learn from others, but at the end of the day, we have to take that learning and make it our own because, at the end of the day, we know our community better than anyone.” In this conversation with Stephanie Smith and George Couros, the two talk about how learning is personal and unique to each individual. The two take the time to discuss how we have to remember to understand the experiences of all learners. Smith reflects on how, at times, she will struggle as a teacher in the classroom with the same ideas she tried to implement as an administrator. Smith talks about health, education, and more in this episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast: Lessons on Going From Admin Back to the Classroom - A Convo with Stephanie Smith!
