This episode starts off with a conversation about being problem finders and problem solvers. Stacey Wood shares what she is doing in her high school entrepreneurship class and how that connects with the book, The Innovator’s Mindset. Wood goes into detail about what her students are doing in her class’ Idea Center and how they work to be social entrepreneurs and create new products that resolve existing problems. Couros also goes into detail about how to use his 5 Questions to Ask Students at the Start of the Year resource. This closing question is one that Couros is consistently asked, especially by high school teachers: Couros asks Wood, as a high school teacher, when you have students who come into your classroom and are conditioned to have that mentality of “just give me the test,” how do we un-condition our students from that mentality? Wood shares some great advice in response to this question that has helped her as she works to create opportunities for students to show their learning.

In the third episode of #MindsetMonday, George Couros talks about how he has built habits so that he no longer has to negotiate with himself. This episode reflects on a time when Couros would teach spin class in the morning before he went to school and fulfilled his responsibilities as a school principal. Couros reminds us that when there is accountability to other people, we do not have a choice, we have to fulfill our responsibilities, but it is also important to do things where we are accountable to ourselves. This episode gives listeners and viewers a strategy to make habits even when something is difficult.
Questions (PIP):
How can we develop habits so we no longer have to negotiate with ourselves?
How can we give ourselves the same grace that we give others while keeping ourselves accountable?
What are you going to keep yourself accountable for? Whom will you be accountable to?
What are some things that you are doing right now that you do not negotiate? Who are you doing those things for?

Dr. Carey’s fun-loving personality shows through in this episode as he and Couros have an energetic and informative conversation! Couros asks a crucial question in this episode: how do you make tough decisions even when you know you will get pushback? Hear Dr. Carey’s response to this, how he builds relationships with staff at Enumclaw School District, and how he will measure the district’s success during this time, all these answers and more in this episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast: Thriving in a New Role - A Convo with Dr. Shaun Carey!

This week’s #MindsetMonday talks about setting measurable goals that we can see over time and how we separate those goals into big, medium, and small goals to reach that bigger goal. Couros shares a story from Will Smith where he talks about building a brick wall little by little - the lesson learned from building a wall by laying brick after brick is that when we look at the bigger goal, we do not always see the smaller goals that had to be achieved in order to make that bigger goal possible. Couros talks about his compelling reason for losing weight and how he set a tangible goal in this episode of #MindsetMonday.

Questions (PIP):
What smaller goals will help you reach your bigger goals?
How can we create accountability in our goals?
What are the small things you are doing that will help you achieve that bigger goal?
What is the big goal you want to achieve? How can you measure it? How can you break that goal into smaller goals?

“Is innovation in education the responsibility of the administrators or the school as a whole?” This opening question guides this solo episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast with George Couros:
A self-reflection episode where Couros reviews some of the ideas shared and more in the blog post, “4 Ways to Lead and Create a ‘Culture of Innovation’ ” considers some powerful ideas about what innovation is and what it isn’t. Couros reflects on an example when technology was not an example of something innovative in education because it limited learning. Hear how Couros discusses innovation in education and goes in-depth on the following points:
We need to be accountable to each other, not just administrators.
We have to promote and model challenging conversations.
We need to constantly look at our own environments, with fresh eyes.
Focus on being a “school” teacher, not simply a “classroom teacher”.

In the first episode of #MindsetMonday, George Couros encourages listeners and viewers to ask themselves three thought-provoking questions:
What is your compelling reason?
If you want to change something, why? What is your reason for wanting to make that change?
What moments have made you change in your personal life?
Couros uses these three questions to guide this episode and shares his own answers to these questions. Couros also shares more about the new Facebook group, bit.do/healthy-habits which is a place where followers can grow together as a community.

The opening segment shares a thought about changing our statements from “breaks” to “connections and reflections.” This shift in thinking creates a time where learners build relationships and create content. This opening thought from George Couros summarizes this episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast with Bryon Carpenter. This episode came because Carpenter created his own podcast episode, Fresh at Five, reflecting on a previous episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast! Bryon talks about maintaining academic integrity, consuming learning and resources, building relationships and collaboration, and becoming creators of content in this episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast!
